Arkestar’s latest conjures up dream-filled soundscapes of exquisite retro-funk!

To paraphrase Rod Serling, you are moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You’ve just crossed over into...Vingt Vingt Funk! Multi-instrumentalist Arkestar’s latest album delivers shimmering sonic dreamscapes to send you into otherworldly adventures. These neo-impressionistic vignettes, inspired by Poulenc to Prince, capture ideas inspiring nostalgic yearnings and exhibit a range of moods to electrify the soul.

After the opening with the heavy foot-stomper that is Spy Vibe, a blast of horns plunge us into the chill-funk soundtrack Psychedelic Celluloid, its ominous and chromatic organ chords reminiscent of classic espionage scenes from the film archive. Mediocre Murder, with its beautiful reverberated piano melody, is a lush canopy of sound guided by filtered synths tinged with sadness. After several solid dreamscapes,

Higher takes us into more uptempo territory, switching up the mood with shuffling groove, gritty synth bass, horn riffs and rising celestial vocals providing flowing atmospherics. The Satie-esque My Deceiver provides a chilled and poignant, synth-ladened backdrop to a gently distant, echoing piano through glimpses of unbridled optimism. Beguiled, a plaintive and searching instrumental, allows us to pause for contemplative reflection, until the arrival of Misguided, its gentle jazz piano meanderings reminding us of classic, late-night tube themes of yesteryear.

The light-hearted Raw with its quasi-Egyptian reggae flavours and the political Dirty Tricks mark a noticeable departure from the preceding style of music, dusting off the guitar for some rock-infused reality checks. Penultimately, The Dutch Bullion Car Chase would have made a nice closer. This wonderfully played, moody jazz swinger, with its muted and unmuted trumpets provides another great instrumental with its dramatic twists and turns.

In conclusion, Arkestar’s Vingt Vingt Funk is a largely coherent and sincere album, expertly written and teeming with melodic ideas, themes and moods to create funk-infused, meditative and cinematic soundscapes that go beyond the realm of our imagined reality.
